Indian oceanographers discovered an active hydrothermal vent 4,500 metres below the Southern Indian Ocean’s surface as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, and the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, conducted high-resolution imaging of sulphide fields at the Central and Southwest Indian Ridges, highlighting potential mineral resources and chemosynthetic microbes.
